Why Vietri works as a base

Vietri sul Mare is where the Amalfi Coast meets the railway. The station has trains for Salerno, Pompeii and Naples; the pier has Travelmar ferries along the coast; and the SITA coastal line passes through towards Amalfi. Few places on the coast have all three, and Vietri is quieter than the towns further west.

What is the best day trip from Vietri sul Mare?

For a first visit, Amalfi by ferry: 45 min on board, all year, sea permitting. For history, Pompeii by train, 33 min. For gardens and views, Ravello by bus via Amalfi.

Can you do day trips from Vietri without a car?

Yes: every trip on this page works by public transport, and on the coast it is the better choice. The coast road is slow and can be limited to alternating number plates on peak days, and parking in the towns is scarce.

Do the ferries from Vietri run all year?

Travelmar’s timetable is annual: from 1 October it lists departures from Vietri towards Amalfi and Positano. Sailings depend on the sea; when they stop, the SITA bus is the plan B.
