Is February a good time to visit the Amalfi Coast?
February is the quietest month on the coast and one of the most rewarding for walkers and slow travellers who do not mind the odd rainy day. Highs are around 13.5 °C and nights around 7.5 °C, so a warm layer and a waterproof are essential. Days lengthen quickly through the month: by mid-February the sun sets around 17:35, leaving time for a full day out. Expect rain on about 11 days in an average February. Early blossom, Carnival celebrations when the date falls in February, and empty viewpoints make it a month of small pleasures. Some hotels and restaurants reopen only in March or April, so choose a base that is open and check the places you want to visit. If you want sea and sun, wait until June; if you want the coast to yourself, February is hard to beat.
Can you swim on the Amalfi Coast in February?
February has the coldest sea of the year: around 15 °C in recent years (2021–2025) and 14.5 °C as the 1991–2020 average. Swimming is for the hardy only, and there are no beach services. It is a month for walks along the shore and the harbour of Marina di Vietri, for watching the light change on the cliffs of Raito and Cetara, and for long lunches with a sea view rather than for time in the water.
How do you get around the coast in February?
As in the rest of the winter, the SITA bus is the backbone: from Marina d’Albori the stop at the top of the approximately 200 steps is served all year, towards Vietri and Salerno and towards Amalfi. Travelmar ferries run all year between Salerno, Vietri sul Mare and Amalfi, and sailings are cancelled in rough seas, so check before you plan around them. Trains from Vietri reach Salerno, for Paestum, and Pompei towards Naples. Driving is easy on the coastal road in winter, but parking in the towns is still limited.
