Is September a good time to visit the Amalfi Coast?

September is one of the best months of the year. The sea has stored the whole summer’s heat while the air turns gentler: afternoons around 27.5 °C, nights around 19.5 °C. Once the Italian school holidays end, the towns and beaches become calmer, and walking is comfortable again. The sun sets around 19:10 in mid-September, so evenings are still long. The weather starts to change later in the month, with rain on about 9 days in an average September, often as short, heavy storms. It is also harvest time on the terraces, and every seasonal service is still open. For a holiday that combines swimming, walking and day trips, September is hard to improve on.

Can you swim on the Amalfi Coast in September?

Yes. The sea is warmer in September than in June: around 25.5 °C on average in recent years (2021–2025), and 24.5 °C over 1991–2020. Beach clubs stay open through the month, with paid sunbeds and umbrellas that are easier to find than in August, and the free sea access next to the property needs no booking. After a storm the sea can be rough for a day or two, then clear again.

How do you get around the coast in September?

September is the last month of the taxi boat between Marina di Vietri and the cove, on request, paid and sea permitting, and the ferry pier is a short walk from Marina di Vietri. Travelmar ferries keep the summer timetable along the coast; the autumn and winter timetable starts on 1 October. Check the departures for your date. SITA buses stop at the top of the approximately 200 steps in both directions all year, and regional trains from Vietri’s station run to Salerno and Pompei. Roads are calmer than in August.
